The Charles Rattray Monarch Terracotta 178 Yellow is a bold and well-rounded bent Rhodesian pipe. Known for its muscular bowl, twin beadlines, and deep chamber, it’s a true workhorse of a pipe. However, it’s dressed here with a cheerful air that softens its posture without compromising its dignity.

The terracotta finish is warm and reddish, reminiscent of old brickwork or polished mahogany. It’s smooth to the touch but reveals just enough grain to remind you that this is honest briar, not lacquered furniture. The wide-set bowl fits comfortably in the palm, while the bent stem provides ease of clench for those long smokes that extend well past dusk.

The bright yellow acrylic stem is a signature element across the Monarch line—vibrant, sturdy, and unapologetically cheerful. The nickel mount at the shank adds a touch of contrast, reinforcing the structure while tying the design together with a subtle glint.

Like other pipes in the series, the 177 accepts a 9mm filter, offering the option of a drier, cooler smoke for those who prefer it—or simply leaving it out for a freer draw. Regardless of the filter choice, the draft is clean, and the feel in the hand is stout and comforting.

Founded in 1903 by Charles Rattray of Perth, Rattray’s has always been known for its tradition-meets-flair approach. The Monarch range, now crafted in Germany, continues this spirit, especially in shapes like this. The bent Rhodesian has long been a favourite for its practicality and elegant lines, and here, it’s given a touch of sunshine.
