The Design Berlin Captain DBP051 is a half-bent 9mm briar pipe distinguished by its broad Apple-shaped bowl, smooth reddish-brown finish and polished metal mounting.
The bowl has a substantial rounded profile, with a broad heel, softly curved sides and a gently shaped rim. Its smooth polished finish reveals the natural variation in the briar, with the photographed example displaying darker grain running diagonally across the rich red-brown stain.
A polished Army-style metal mount provides the principal decorative feature of the Captain series. The broad fitting at the end of the briar shank is complemented by a second polished section leading into the mouthpiece, creating a distinctive stepped transition between wood and acrylic.
The glossy black acrylic mouthpiece is gently curved to form the pipe's half-bent profile and carries Design Berlin's gold DB emblem.
The DBP051 accepts 9mm pipe filters, a format with a long association with Design Berlin and German pipe making. Design Berlin adopted the DB name around 1975 after Lothar Schirwitz had progressively moved the company towards higher-quality briar pipes and more contemporary designs.
The present Captain range is offered in three variants, with the DBP051 occupying the compact half-bent position between the straight and fully bent interpretations.
