Have you just switched to cigars? Often, when we take up something new, it can take a little while for us to learn how to get the most out of it. As such, here are a few tips on how you can take your cigar smoking experience to the next level! If you need a complete cigar guide, check out our detailed smoking tutorial.

  1. Learn the right way to light your cigars! It’s not uncommon to accidentally ruin a few cigars when you start to smoke cigars for the first time. This is often done by lighting them wrong.
  2. Purge your cigar! This means that any time some bad flavours start getting tasted, just blowback through a single cigar, or into a flame. This makes a large difference and improves the flavour to no end.
  3. Listen to the cigar… not literally put your ear to it, but watch how it is burning. Some cigars want to be smoked very slowly indeed, some need more attention. Observe the way it burns and taste the flavours, all to know if you need to set it down for a second – or if you need to keep puffing away!
  4. Be gentle, do not try to double or triple puff if you can avoid doing so – the majority of cigars taste the best if you get it on a single puff.
  5. Don’t be afraid to correct a strange burn, use your torch to try and keep the burn straight. Some cigars will correct themselves if the burn goes a little crooked,  simply hold the side with the burn on facing down.
  6. Be careful with pairings! Pairing a superbly flavourful stick with something gnarly like an Islay Scotch can take away from the enjoyment of both things. Pay attention to the strength of both the whisky and the cigar otherwise, they can interfere with each other.
  7. Try a variety of cigars! As with all things, it might take you a little while to find the right one for you, and your taste will likely evolve with time. This is why it’s important you keep experimenting with different cigar types.
  8. Smoke with others! When restrictions are in place you’ll have to give this a miss in real life, but you can always link up with friends on zoom, or other video chat and have a good old cigar smoke together.
  9. Find a Specialist! Talking to a specialist tobacconist can give you access to expert advice. Find someone you feel comfortable talking to and taking recommendations from. It’s absolutely worth spending the additional money getting quality products sent over the post for you to try than settling for whatever you can get. Boxed Cigars can mean that you can load up on quality cigars enmasse.
  10. Don’t fret too much! Cigar smoking is all about slowing down, enjoying the occasion and having a mindful minute to yourself. As such, there’s no need to get hung up on all of the above. It’s easy to get bogged down with all the technicalities of the pastime. The whole point of cigar smoking is, at the end of the day, enjoy the cigar – so do that how it suits you!
