We here at UK Tobacco are readying our glad rags for the upcoming Colwyn Bay Forties Festival which is going to be a great celebration of days gone by in our beautiful little town.
There’s a sense of history obvious to anyone when they take a walk around Colwyn Bay, from the famous beach to the high street and the shops that follow (including ours!). So it should come as no surprise that this wonderful event is looking to commemorate the past of the Bay as one of the main home frontiers during the Second World War.
Previous editions of the Forties Festival have always been attended in numbers with 2014’s show set to be even bigger than the last. If you’re in the area, don’t forget to pop in to see us in all our nostalgic garb over the weekend.
The itinerary for proceedings is as impressive as it is fun for all the family and is the perfect way to get youngsters interested in the past and the region itself. Colwyn Bay was essential during the war effort as it was the headquarters for the Ministry of Food during the whole campaign which is why this lucrative event is so apt!
There will be no shortness of food and no rationing in sight at the Forties Festival over the 12th to 14th of April however as there is so much to see and do, including tucking into some ice creams on the seafront along with all the regular activities which make it so special.
Music of the era will be evident throughout the occasion and you can enjoy George Formby styled acts which will no doubt compliment the swing ensemble who are also set to perform excellently. There could be no better reason to have a jive than when listening to these acts. Also expect to see a wonderful performer who takes inspiration from Vera Lynn.
Last year, the real spectacle of the festival was seeing the Second World War re-enactment. It was such a draw that it in fact attracted 5000 people and that number is only set to increase as does the amount of performers with twice as many due for this year. Expect plenty of fireworks for 2014’s re-enactment at Eirias Park.
New for this year will be the donkey rides which are sure to delight any youngsters along the beach. Any airheads out there will be thrilled to know that there’s going to be a replica Hurricane aircraft available for your fascination. In addition, keep an eye out for the many stalls which its estimated that over 20000 people will be perusing during the festival.
It would be good to wrap up the Forties Festival with a bang but how about a waltz instead? The Ballroom Blitz is an open invitation for anyone who wants to bring their forties dance moves and starts at half 3 on the Sunday with it definitely proving to be the perfect way to conclude a real community event.
Don’t hesitate to come see us in our tobacco shop during the weekend as we’ll be getting in the spirit just like everyone else!
